Johnny sanding the stands

Johnny rubbing down the stands with consummate skill.  These stands were extremely labour intensive and, in addition to the large amount of work required to saw and carve them out, required a great deal of sanding and rubbing down at each stage of their cutting and gessoeing, and between each coat of undercoat and paint.
