The Kakumbi Clinic is situated in Mfuwe about 3km from the Luangwa River and from the South Luangwa National Park, one of the most highly populated game parks in Africa.  The variety and numbers of the animals is astounding.  These are some of the photographs that we took while Johnny was working at the clinic from December 2005 to March 2006.

The presence of the animals and the existence of the Park is ultimately the reason for the presence of a qualified doctor in the area.  The Safari companies need a doctor for their clients and staff.  But dealing with them takes up only a minor part of the doctor's time:  the majority of his time is spent as a volunteer at the Kakumbi Clinic.  But the conditions there are far from ideal.  The roof leaks.  There is no insulation under the roof to isolate it from the tropical sun and conditions inside the clinic are stifling for the staff and for the patients.  There are no showers or toilets in the main Clinic building.  There is only one wash hand basin in the entire clinic.  And the the wiring is antiquated and mortally dangerous.
