Arrival in Patan

Thursday, 18 November, 2010

We were met by Tom Bell - a nephew of Johnny's and mine - and stayed with him and his wife Subi.

We arrived on the first day of the Kartik Natch Festival, celebrated in Durbar Square, Patan, just a few streets from Tom and Subi's where we were staying.  The person playing the main character (see 08 and 09 below) is one of Subi's cousins, and therefore a kind of distant relative of Johnny's and Grant's.  It took him several months and a full month of rehearsals to learn his part.  Kartik is the Nepalese month including October and November, and natch means 'dance'.
