Harpsichord-making woods for sale

Knot-free Italian cypress (known in Italian as cipresso netto)

Price lists, 1 December, 2020:

For case sides and soundboards:

Plank-sawn first-quality cypress in thin planks 2.15 to 3.0 metres long and 5½ to 6½ mm thick - £277 per square metre

The case and soundboard cypress is generally sold in complete flitches with planks each 5½ to 6½ mm thick.  I will not break up individual flitches.  The total cost of a flitch has been calculated individually per plank depending on the amount of usable wood in each plank so that the cost reflects wood that is actually suitable for case sides or for soundboards (plank sawn).  The planks in each flitch are sold as successive cuts from the same log and these obviously have matching grain, colour and texture.

Thin cypress planks

Please note:

Each board in a flitch matches the others in colour, grain and texture.  Generally the planks are each about 5½ to 6½mm thick, but those thicker or thinner than this are noted individually.  Most boards are longer than indicated here, but are discounted because of shakes, etc.  The final price of each plank/flitch will be determined when the flitch is re-opened and each plank is examined individually.

Shipping this wood

To keep shipping costs to a minimum we will generally NOT crate the wood.  Instead we will protect any exposed edges and corners with sturdy packing cardboard and then wrap the wood in several layers of plastic bubble wrap to protect it sufficiently for transport.  Thus we will use the intrinsic rigidity of the wood itself to provide its own strength and rigidity during shipping.  If you want us to crate the wood for extra protection, then ask and we will provide this at extra cost - and obviously extra courier expense.
