Mastone Malipita - School sponsorship

Report made by Johnny and Grant June 2008:

Sponsor:  Formerly my sister Sharon O’Brien, but she says she is unable to continue, so he has no sponsor at the moment.

Grade:   10.  He’s 21 years old.

School:  having made two abortive attempts to get him into school at the beginning of this year he is now attending Matula School but he needs accommodation there.  Matula School is a good school which is just beginning to operate as a Senior Secondary School (so that this part of its activity is receiving special attention although its success is still unknown).  Its located near Mfuwe Airport and is about 27 km from where he lives.

Needs:

Shoes

Traveling bag

Text books

Initially his grades weren’t good, but when once he settled into Matula School he has done well and his marks are making a steady improvement.

He initially shared digs (ie a mid hut) at Matula with 2 Kawaza students which cost 20 pin (K20,000) for him per month.  In fact, the two Kawaza boys ganged up on him and wouldn’t let him share their room nor have they let him continue cooking and eating with them.  We discovered that he has therefore been staying at home, getting up at 4 in the morning without taking breakfast, cycling the 27 km to get to school by 7am when school starts, spending the whole day at school without having lunch, cycling back home (just opposite Yoseffe School near Mfuwe) where he finally gets his one meal of the day.  Once he got settled into Matula, his marks - despite this arduous routine - improved.

Despite the fact that sponsorship has effectively ceased Johnny and I decided to find him a room near the school (60 pin a month), buy him a mattress, sheet and pillow, brazier, charcoal, food and the above requirements.  We hope that these amounts will be taken on board by his new sponsor(s).

Mastone therefore now spends the weekend at home, but stays all week at the school and is able to look after himself.  Fiona bought him a bicycle out of Kawaza funds.  Bicycle:  The understanding is that he can keep the bicycle until the end of this year on the basis that his grades improve.  The matter of the bicycle is to be taken up by his new sponsor if possible.  The Kawaza Project is hoping to get back 380 pin for the bike when a new sponsor is found.

P.S. July 1, 2008 - I’ve just phoned him and he needs K100,000 for mealy meal (corn meal porridge).  So I’ve asked Fiona to send him K200,000 so he has some extra for talk time, and also a spare calculator that we got for ‘our’ kids.
