Mostaf Phiri - School sponsorship

Report made by Johnny and Grant June 2008:

Sponsor: Steve Carr and Alex Dyet

Grade:  10

School:  Mfuwe Secondary

No telephone contact.

Mostaf’s mother is living and works as a subsistence farmer.  7 others including Mostaf are dependent on her - effectively this means that they are all dependent on Mostaf.  Mostaf’s father died in 1996 and his mother didn’t re-marry.

Mostaf would very much like to board at Mfuwe either as a week-boarder or as a full-boarder and so avoid the long journey from home to school each day.  Full board costs K350,000 not including school fees.  This means, for example, that Mostaf could do homework and evening activities where there is electricity and would not have to work by candle-light.  It also means that he doesn’t waste all the time each day cycling back and forth.

Mostaf says that he would like to get a straight 6 (highest possible points in ALL subjects) when he does his Grade 12 exams in two years.  [I don’t think he would say this unless he stood some chance of actually doing it!]

He would like to be a doctor when he finishes his education.

Needs School Uniform shoes and textbooks.

Ticks over nicely and is delighted with being sponsored.
